M13

I actually got to do a M13 draft the other week. We took Kaleb along to Hemel with us, to see everyone again and when we were about to start drafting, Kaleb had almost finished feeding, so we waiting so Liz cold join in too - she hadn't the last time we went with Kaleb.

As he was still awake, I conduced the draft with him on my lap, with seemed to go well, he just sat there chewing his hand as he often does. My first pick was the new Liliana planeswalker, which I took quite happily and went to get as many other black cards as I could. I had a choice between Cower in Fear and the black ring fourth pick, taking the ring, which I think was the right choice.

I hadn't finalised on a second colour in the first pack, but stared to move into green.

I built the deck fairly quickly, it had a pretty low curve but some nice finishers. Kaleb had started to get fractious by this point so my first round opponent kindly sleeved and shuffled my deck.

I won the first match and lost the next two,all the time having some very close games. I won a couple by casting Sign in Blood targeting an opponent at two life :-)

In all, I had a fun time, and it was great to see everyone again. The set is fun to play, and even has some hidden complexity for a core set. I once cast Rise from the grave on my green "Serra Spider", and started getting the bonus from the black ring because it was also black now.

Drafting Avacyn Restored

Me and Liz went along to Hemel to do a draft of Avacyn Restored last night; probably the last time we'll be able to go for a little while. This would be the second time to draft the set, so we had a bit of an idea about what some of the cards did.

Dark Ascension draft

I've not been able to draft as much as I would have liked recently, so was happy that me and Liz had a spare evening to go along to Hemel yesterday. Getting ready, we wondered how many times we had actually drafted the set, figuring it had only been once, maybe twice. I had gone to the pre-release so was one time up, but it was still a lot less than I would have liked.

Sitting down, we opened the Dark Ascension pack and I had a look through, before deciding that, as I hadn't played the set much (and won't have much of a chance to soon), I would go for a fun deck as opposed to a super powerful one, and went with Diregraf Captain, with the intention to get a fun Zombie deck.

Drafting, and the power of infect

On Tuesday me and Liz headed over to Hemel for drafting the new Magic the Gathering set. The drafting format was Mirrodin Besieged, Mirrodin Besieged, Scars of Mirrodin, and was the first time I had drafted with the new set, and the first time Liz had played with it at all.

Mirrodin Besieged Hemel Release

Went to the Hemel Mirrodin Besieged release last weekend, run by Rob. Had originally planned to go with Liz, but she was feeling unwell, tired and had work to do so stayed home that Sunday instead.
